Heart disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is a broad term used to describe a range of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. It is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and develops mainly when fatty deposits, cholesterol, or other substances build up inside the arteries, a process called atherosclerosis. This build-up reduces or blocks blood flow, making it harder for oxygen and nutrients to reach the heart and other parts of the body. If not controlled, heart disease can lead to serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, or heart failure.
There are different types of heart disease. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common, caused by narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. Heart attack happens when blood flow to a part of the heart is completely blocked, leading to damage of the heart muscle. Heart failure occurs when the heart becomes too weak to pump blood effectively. Other forms include arrhythmia, which is an irregular heartbeat, and congenital heart defects, which are heart problems present at birth. Each type of heart disease has its own symptoms and treatments, but all affect the normal functioning of the heart.
Common risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, unhealthy diet, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and family history of heart problems. Stress and aging also play important roles in increasing the risk. The symptoms vary depending on the type of heart disease but often include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, and swelling in the legs or ankles. In many cases, people may not notice symptoms until the condition becomes severe.
Prevention and management of heart disease involve making healthy lifestyle choices and following medical guidance. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins helps reduce cholesterol and maintain heart health. Regular physical activity strengthens the heart and improves blood circulation. Avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress are also essential steps. For people already diagnosed, medications may be prescribed to control blood pressure, cholesterol, or heart rhythm, and in some cases, surgical procedures such as angioplasty or bypass surgery may be necessary. With proper care and lifestyle management, the risks and complications of heart disease can be significantly reduced, allowing individuals to lead longer and healthier lives.
